Leona Lewis mp3
In her short music career, Leona Lewis has achieved more success than many artists twice her age have. The young singer from East London got her break on the TV talent show, The X Factor, but she had put in years of hard work beforehand before she hit the big time. Leona Louise Lewis was born in London in April 1985. Her exotic looks are down to her Afro-Guyanese, Welsh, Italian and Irish genes. From a young age, Lewis was a performer, entertaining friends and family at every opportunity. Recognising that her talent needed nurturing, her parents scrimped and saved to send her to the Sylvia Young Theatre School and later to the Italia Conti School where she received proper training in dance, singing and theatre. She later won a place at The Brits Performing Arts and Technology School in Croydon, South London. The school was set up in 1991 to nurture young performers. Past attendees at the college include Adele, Amy Winehouse and Katie Melhua. At the college, Lewis took up the piano and guitar along with opera singing lessons, although she eventually moved away from the classical discipline into more jazz and blues singing. She does however, still practise her opera scales on a weekly basis to keep her mezzo-soprano voice in tip-top condition. By now, Lewis had decided she wanted a career in the music business as a singer-songwriter. She had begun writing songs at the tender age of 12 and when she left the Brits College, she began work on a demo album to showcase her singing and song writing talents. The demo album was self-funded with Lewis taking short-term jobs in London to pay for the recording sessions. “Twilight” was recorded under the small label Spiral Music but failed to secure a recording contract. Undeterred, Lewis continued to write and record, completing another demo album, “Best Kept Secret”, this time for UEG Entertainment. Still unable to break into the music industry, Leona considered going to university until her boyfriend persuaded her to audition for the music talent show, The X Factor. That one decision was to change Lewis’s life forever. From the opening notes of her first audition song, “Over the Rainbow”, Lewis stood out from the crowd. She progressed easily through the initial audition phases and quickly became an audience favourite once the live shows began. In December 2006, she was announced the overwhelming winner and was given a £1 million recording contract. For her debut single, Lewis recorded a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This”. Within 30 minutes of it’s release, it had been downloaded over 50,000 times and became the number one single in the UK Christmas charts, a position it held for four weeks and sold more copies than the remainder of the charts combined. Lewis’s talent was recognised by the US music industry and in February 2007, she signed a five-album deal with J Records worth £5 million. J Records’s American Record Producer and executive Clive Davis and he announced that he would be working with X Factor producer, Simon Cowell to produce Lewis’s first album, “Spirit”. The first single from “Spirit” entered the charts in October 2007. “Bleeding Love” went to the top of the UK singles chart for seven weeks as well as hitting the top spot in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, along with many other countries. “Spirit” was released in November 2007 and became the fastest selling album in UK chart history. Five months later, it stormed to the top of the US Billboard 200 album chart, after Leona had recorded additional tracks for the US release. In an unusual move, a special edition of the album was re-released in the UK in November 2008 and again, it went to the top of the charts. Leona had a busy 2008, promoting the album and singles worldwide and in late summer, she performed at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, joining Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in a rendition of “Whole Lotta Love” to mark the passing of the games to the next hosts, London. In November 2008, Leona performed a cover of Snow Patrol’s “Run” on X Factor. The song was immediately released as a download and sold 70,000 copies in two days, making it the fastest-selling download single to date. The song also appeared on the re-released edition of “Spirit” the same month. The following month, Lewis was nominated for three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and at the Brit Awards but failed to win any of her nominations. However, it was not all failure on the awards scene as she won two categories at the MOBO Awards and named Top New Artist for 2008 by the influential Billboard magazine. Her second album, “Echo” was released in November 2009. To promote the album, Lewis performed a concert in her home borough of Hackney, East London. Like its predecessor, the album went straight to the top of the charts in the UK. Single releases from the album include “Happy” which was co-written by Lewis and the more up-tempo, “I Got You”. Lewis also found time to record the theme song to the sci-fi movie phenomenon, Avatar that was nominated for Best Original Song at the US Golden Globe Awards. In May 2010, Lewis embarked on her first tour. The “Labyrinth” tour was based on the movie of the same name and showcased songs from both of Lewis’ albums, plus some new works. As soon as the tour finished, Lewis began work on her new album, due to be released in mid-2011. Many rumours surround the album’s direction and collaborators. Rumours list Ne-Yo and David Guetta amongst others. Whatever direction Leona decides to take, her amazing voice is sure to send the record to the top of the charts. Even though she spends a lot of time in the USA, recording and writing, Leona’s heart remains in East London. She has a house in Hackney where she used to live with her childhood sweetheart until their split in mid-2010. In magazine interviews, she often complains how hard it is to be away from home, friends and family for extended periods as she works on her career but she understands that hard work that she needs to maintain if she is to have a long career in the business. Going on past performance, Lewis will be dominating the charts for many years to come.
